Saalachtaler Hoehenweg

Embark on a fun adventure along the Saalachtaler Höhenweg, an enchanting trail that begins at the Asitz in Leogang and winds its way to the exhilarating toboggan run at Biberg in Saalfelden.

As you set off from Asitz Valley Station, you take the mountain cable car to the top of the mountain. From there head up to the cross for an amazing panoramic view of the Leoganger Steinberge. The hiking path then takes us to the “Cinema of Nature" where you can relax on one of the wooden lounge chairs or lay in a hammock listening to the sound of nature around you.

Now we begin with our hike along the Saarlachtaler Hoehenweg. This high-altitude path is a hiker's paradise, weaving through vibrant alpine meadows adorned with wildflowers and tranquil forests where the air is crisp and the scent of pine tickles your nose. Along the way, you'll encounter a charming wooden hut and several benches offering delightful spots to rest and savor a traditional snack while soaking in the breathtaking scenery.

As you continue your hike, keep an eye out for the local wildlife—majestic deer, playful marmots, and perhaps even a soaring eagle. Almost at the end of our hike, we reach the restaurant at Oberbiberg where a cold beer and a traditional Porksandwich await the hungry adventurer. Taking a break here is highly recommended.

Reaching the exhilarating finale at Biberg, you're in for a treat! The toboggan run promises an adrenaline-pumping ride down the mountain, with twists and turns that will leave you grinning from ear to ear.

Whether you're an adventurous soul or simply seeking a peaceful retreat in nature's embrace, the Saarlachtaler Höhenweg offers an unforgettable experience from start to finish.

Tips for the hike:
good mountain boots for the path is rocky and uneven
take enough water and food with you, there are no cabins along the path
visit the cabin at Oberbiberg for some traditional Austrian food
if you don't want to ride the toboggan you can either walk down or take the lift back down.
Arrived at the bottom you can walk down to the main road and catch a public bus that can bring you, after one change back to your starting point Asitz station.

Birnbachloch

Get ready for an unforgettable adventure as we set off on the hike to Birnbachloch, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of the Leoganger Steinberge! The Birnbachlochgletscher is one of the lowest glaciers in Central Europe.

This trek to Birnbachloch is for experienced hikers, as it demands a high level of endurance and navigational skills through challenging terrain. As you step onto the trail, you'll find yourself immediately immersed in a serene forest, with sunlight filtering through the canopy and the gentle rustle of leaves underfoot.

As you ascend, the trail offers amazing views of towering peaks each view more breathtaking than the last. About quarterway through your hike, you'll encounter a wooden bridge that spans a bubbling mountain stream. This is the perfect spot to take a breather, dip your toes in the cool, refreshing water, and enjoy a snack while listening to the soothing sounds of nature. From here the path gets steeper and you enter an Alpine Path. The path winds its way through an Alpine wonderland, where vibrant wildflowers add splashes of color to the lush greenery and massive stone formations with glacier snow nearby.

As you climb higher, the landscape transforms into a dramatic scene straight out of a fairy tale with the sight of snow accompanying you part of the way. Then the majestic Birnbachloch comes into view, its entrance framed by towering cliffs and rocks. The entrance to the kast-spring is an awe-inspiring sight, with water cascading from its mouth in a sparkling waterfall that creates a mesmerizing mist. For the fearless explorer, venturing into the spring reveals a tiny lake. Take this opportunity and jump into the ice-cold waters. The atmosphere is almost magical, with the sound of dripping water echoing around you.

After soaking in the beauty and serenity of Birnbachloch, your return journey offers a chance to relive the highlights of the hike, perhaps spotting new details you missed on the way up. Flying Like a Bird in Leogang: The Flying Fox at Asitz

On our trip through Austria, we got the chance to try out the Flying Fox in Leogang, and let me just say, this was hands-down one of the most adrenaline-filled and unforgettable experiences!

Getting Started
We started by checking in right at the cable car station, where we picked up our tickets and hopped on the lift. About halfway up the mountain, we got out at the middle station and made our way over to the launch point for the zipline.

Safety First
The team there was super friendly and professional. Before anything else, they explained how the Flying Fox works, what to expect, and how to position yourself. Then it was time to suit up! We slipped into our gear, got clipped in, and suddenly it was very real.

The Flight
And then… off we went! The rush was incredible. You’re lying in a horizontal position, soaring over the landscape like Superman, with nothing but the crisp mountain air around you. The view was just breathtaking, endless alpine scenery, and that feeling of pure freedom. It really does feel like flying.

Back to Base
Once the ride was over (way too quickly, if you ask me), a shuttle car picked us up and brought us back to the entrance of the station. It was smooth, easy, and gave us a chance to catch our breath and let the adrenaline settle.

A Special Touch
At the very end, we got a certificate of completion for conquering the Flying Fox. Such a fun keepsake to remember the adventure, and it's a nice proof that we actually did it!

Final Thoughts
The Flying Fox at Leogang is the perfect mix of adventure and scenery. If you love a thrill but also want to take in some of the best mountain views in Austria, this is something you absolutely have to try. I’d do it again in a heartbeat.
