Kitzbühel/Austria - It’s More than Just Winter. Way More.

Kitzbühel/Austria - It’s More than Just Winter. Way More.

Kitzbühel isn’t just about glitz, glamour, and skiing in winter; in summer, it turns into a cozy, scenic haven for hiking. Think blooming alpine meadows instead of ski slopes, and hearty mountain dishes instead of après-ski parties.

Kitzbüheler Horn, here we come!

Our first hike was already a true highlight. A cable car ride (Hornbahn I) followed by a second one (Horngipfelbahn) takes you all the way up to the Kitzbüheler Horn at 1,996 meters.

And once you're up there? Just wow. A full 360° panoramic view: rolling green hills, rugged peaks, tiny villages far down in the valley.

From the summit, a beautiful trail leads down to Lake Hornköpfl. Nestled in the grassy mountains, it looks like it’s always belonged there. The path is easy and fun—open landscapes, curious cows watching as you pass, and before you know it, you’ve arrived.

Now for the best part: right by the lake, there’s a Kneipp hydrotherapy area. Ice-cold, crystal-clear water to bring your tired legs back to life. Dip your feet, breathe deeply, gaze out over the lake… pure bliss.

If you’re up for it, take the return trail via the Karst Learning Path. It’s not difficult, but you’ll want to be steady on your feet.

From there, the trail continues toward the Alpenhaus. That’s where your well-earned reward awaits: goulash, a cold beer, and those iconic wooden deck chairs that somehow beat any spa lounger. View included. The sun warms your skin, a soft breeze brushes by, the sound of cowbells in the distance... Honestly, I had a moment where I thought about just staying there forever.

This tour is perfect for anyone who wants a little hiking and a lot of scenery. No hardcore trekking, just soaking in nature, breathing in the views, cooling your feet in fresh mountain water, and ending it all with full-on lounge vibes.

Racing down Hahnenkamm - or not

And if you still haven’t had enough of that mountain feeling, head up to the Hahnenkamm!

The Hahnenkamm cable car takes you up with ease, and at the top, you’re greeted by a completely different kind of panorama. Green, wide-open landscapes and so many stunning hiking routes, you won’t even know where to begin.

We decided to hike down the Streif. Yes, the Streif, the legendary downhill skiing racecourse from the Hahnenkamm race.
Standing at the top by the "Mausefalle" (Mouse Trap), seeing just how steep it really is… whoa. You gain a whole new level of respect for the ski pros who throw themselves down this slope at 140 km/h in winter.

And for a split second, you wonder if maybe taking the cable car back down wouldn’t be the smarter choice. But no, down we went, and it’s seriously steep!
You definitely need to pause now and then, stare in disbelief, and say: “Wait… they actually race down this?!”

Luckily, halfway down, the Seidlalm awaits with food, drinks, and a chance to recover in the tastiest way possible.

City Strolls & Sunset Sips

And then it’s time to kick off the hiking boots, throw on your sunglasses, and dive into town life. The mountain adventure may be over, but the day is far from done. Kitzbühel itself has plenty to offer. No need for big plans, just stroll through the old town, do a little window shopping, people-watch, and soak up that signature Kitzbühel flair.

One of our absolute favorite afternoon hangouts: H’ugo’s. Grab a seat outside, sip an Aperol (or two), and watch the world go by. And if you don’t feel like going far for dinner, H’ugo’s is also a great dinner spot. Italian cuisine, cool lounge vibes, stylish without being over the top. Because honestly, pizza and pasta just always hit the spot.

As the sun sets, it’s Glockenspiel & wine bar vibes. If you're in the mood to keep going, head to Glockenspiel, a true Kitzbühel institution with good energy and great drinks. Or, if you're after something a little more upscale, the Leo Hillinger Wine Bar is the place to be with fantastic Austrian wines, chic interiors, and the occasional celebrity sighting (just saying).

My personal favorite. Berggasthof Hagstein - rustic by day, elegant by night. During the day, they serve up a yummy Brettljause with postcard-perfect mountain views: cows grazing in the meadow, homemade bread, speck, cheese, really everything your alpine-loving heart could ask for.
And in the evening, the place transforms into a true gourmet hideaway. Fine dining, an exceptional wine list, and views that glow in the evening light. It's almost too beautiful to be real. Trust me: it’s worth making a reservation.

Craving afternoon cocktails with castle vibes?
If your day calls for a relaxing break or you just fancy a drink with a view, head to the terrace of the Kitzbühel Schlosshotel or Lebenberg Schlosshotel. Both offer gorgeous spots for a sundowner: elegant, laid-back, and effortlessly cozy.

If you’ve still got space in your suitcase, you’re bound to find something in Kitzbühel. The town is full of charming fashion boutiques, stylish shops, and especially beautiful traditional clothing. Even if you’re not looking for anything, you’ll probably end up buying something anyway.

A personal favorite, especially for home deco lovers: Salvenmoser Eisenwaren. It may sound like a hardware store, but it’s actually a treasure trove of home and kitchen accessories, gifts, and decor. I could spend hours browsing in there.

Looking for local gems? Head to "Unsere Kiste".
If you love bringing home regional specialties, this little wooden hut near the Gries parking lot is a true Kitzbühel highlight. They sell homemade jams, honey, syrups, and schnapps. All locally made, beautifully packaged, and crafted with heart. Perfect as a gift or just to enjoy yourself.

Kitzbühel does summer, and it does it well.
Whether it’s summit moments, gourmet treats, or laid-back strolls, Kitzbühel in summer just feels good all around. It’s relaxed, elegant, sometimes with a hint of high society, but always totally down to earth. And whatever you’re doing: the mountains are always there, the air is fresh, and that feeling of this is exactly where you feel meant to be.
